How Does Coaching Work?
-
It is a 30--60 minute session where YOU set the agenda and focus, either in person or over the telephone.
-
It is a safe (high confidentiality), non-threatening space where you can think out loud and discover options or opportunities to move you or your church/ministry forward.
-
It is a place where you will be heard, encouraged and challenged to move forward with what is important to you.
-
It is discovery driven.
What Coaching is NOT
-
It is not counseling or therapy, which is recovery driven.
-
It is not consulting, which is expert driven.
-
It is not mentoring, which is follow-my-example driven.
-
It is not athletic coaching, which is performance driven.
When would someone work with a Coach?
There are many reasons to work with a coach. A big reason for those in ministry today is to have someone who will really listen and help them think through issues and options. Below are a few of the reasons someone would choose to work with a coach:
-
Really wants change and has been unsuccessful in the past.
-
Requires a big stretch.
-
Needs a course correction.
-
Notices that what used to work isn't working anymore.
-
Needs to make decisions and doesn't know what to do.
-
Realizes that work and life are out of balance.
-
Desire for life to be simpler and less complicated.
-
Wants to improve relationships with family, ministry staff, and church members.
-
Wants to think more creatively.
-
Unable to see the BIG picture and distracted by other things.
-
Feels stuck.
- Exhibits an unrealistic need to please people.
-
Is seriously considering leaving the ministry all together.
-
Feels overly responsible for most of what needs to be done.
-
Feels overwhelmed with all that is expected.
-
Feels isolated and disconnected.
What is the process of coaching?
-
A person would normally contact one of our certified staff members and set up a session either over the phone or in person.
-
If the person being coached feels that continued sessions would be beneficial, they would schedule times either once or twice a month for three to six months or longer if needed.
What can I expect out of a typical coaching session?
-
You will be heard and you can expect deep listening.

You will be encouraged and affirmed.

You will be valued and respected.

You may be challenged.
-
You will be held accountable, in whatever way you prefer, for decisions and progress you would like to make.

What others have said about coaching?
"My coaching journey began when TBA offered the training. I didn't know much about it, but was willing to give it a try. Coaching resulted in my challenging assumptions I had no idea I had — assumptions about my personal life and ministry. Our coaching sessions resulted in my having a more confident approach to life and work that has changed my outlook dramatically. My coach was intentionally focused on drawing out the best in me. I felt like I had my very own cheerleader who was rooting me on. I now have more hope for the future!"
"I wasn't sure about coaching or how it would really help me when I started. I had gone on many diets and had been working out several times a week for years, but just wasn't making the progress that I wanted. Coaching was huge for me. My coach helped me think out a plan that would work for my life. She helped me to stay realistic and examine what barriers I might encounter before they happened and plan for them. We would talk over the phone two times each month and I always wanted to be able to tell her I had lost weight. She was so encouraging and kept me focused on the results I wanted. She helped me to understand that I had used food as a reward and change my reward to having to purchase all new clothes (reasonably). Not only did I lose 45 pounds, but I have kept it off for about two years now. I have a whole new lifestyle and perspective about health. Not only did I learn discipline with my eating, but I also gained discipline in my spiritual walk."
"My discovery of coaching has resulted in amazing transformation of my life and my relations. As I coach others, I listen deeply to who they are and what is really important to them. I allow God to use me to help them discover what is really of value in their life, family, job and ministry. I then help them take action to improve in those areas. In my coaching training, I have been coached many times. As a result I am not only discovering more of who I am and what is of greatest value to me, but I am learning to be more transparent to others. God is working in my life a way I have never imagined. Why, because I am open to and listening to God, to others and even to myself. I am moving toward my valuable life-goals with understanding and action."
